DENVER — A woman was carjacked early Wednesday morning, police say, amid a search for car theft suspects near Denver International Airport, which prompted officers to shut down a popular park-and-ride lot for more than an hour.

Officers initially responded to the 24700 block of East 75th Ave. around 1:15 Wednesday morning after two cars were stolen from the Hertz rental car at the airport, Denver police said. The vehicles were found nearby unoccupied with flat tires according to police.

A short time later, officers spotted the suspects, who fired shots toward officers then left the area on foot, Doug Schepman, a spokesman for Denver Police said. The officers did not return fire, according to Schepman.

Denver Police then set up a perimeter to search for the suspects. During that search, police said a woman was carjacked in the Pikes Peak Shuttle Lot. She was taken to the hospital with a head laceration.

Officers found her vehicle not far away unoccupied, Schepman said.

The Pikes Peak Shuttle Lot remained closed during the search but re-opened around 3:30 a.m., according to Schepman.

A 9NEWS viewer e-mailed and said she and others had been stranded on a Pikes Peak shuttle for two hours.

Denver Police are still searching for two men involved in this crime. They could not provide a detailed description early Wednesday morning.
