CU band director up for Grammy award

CU's band director had a hand in producing an album of John Williams' best-known works. The recording is up for a 2019 Grammy award.

KUSA - The 61st annual Grammy awards are being held this weekend, and a music professor at the University of Colorado Boulder is among the nominees.

Donald McKinney, the director of bands and an associate professor at the University of Colorado Boulder, was nominated for a Grammy for his hand in producing an album for the Dallas Winds titled John Williams: At the Movies. McKinney was nominated alongside conductor Jerry Junkin.

McKinney's nomination is in the Best Classical Compendium category, which recognizes recordings with at least 51 percent newly recorded material.

McKinney describes the experience of being nominated as surreal. He joined 9NEWS Friday to talk about how the album came to be and the role Colorado plays in his music. Watch the full interview in the video above.
