BOULDER COUNTY — A 31-year-old Denver man died Saturday after falling near the base of Navajo Peak.

The victim and his girlfriend hiked to the peak from Brainard Lake.

The man was climbing a boulder when he slipped and fell, according to Cmdr. Mike Wagner with the Boulder County Sheriff's Office.

The man's girlfriend estimated that he fell between 20-30 feet. She told deputies he hit his head several times while falling. The man landed in a rocky crevasse.

Deputies said the girlfriend, a medical doctor, climbed down to him and found that he did not have a pulse.

They said the victim had sustained massive trauma and could not have been resuscitated.

The girlfriend did not have cell service and had to hike back to Brainard Lake to call for help. The hike between Navajo Peak and Brainard Lake usually takes around an hour-and-a-half to two hours.

The man's body could not be recovered Saturday due to inclement weather and the lateness of the day.

Rescue crews will attempt to recover the body Sunday morning. Deputies said the recovery is expected to take some time.

The sheriff's office said the girlfriend is cooperating with their investigation and that they do not believe there are any signs of foul play.

The man's identity has not yet been released.
