DENVER — A bill that would fund a new medical school in Colorado and other capital improvements at higher education institutions is one step closer to passing.

House Bill 24-1231 passed the Colorado House Wednesday. The vote was 42-17, with members of the Republican party casting all of the “no” votes.

The bill, called State Funding for Higher Education Projects, would allow the state to issue certificates of participation to fund four projects at four different schools. Each project would help Colorado educate more health care workers and ease the worker shortage in the field.

One of those projects is a new osteopathic medical college at University of Northern Colorado in Weld County. According to UNC representatives, the college would graduate 150 new doctors into the workforce each year.

Andy Feinstein, president of UNC, told the House and Human Services committee on Feb. 28 that the new medical school would be especially helpful in easing the rural health care worker shortage because UNC educates many students who already have roots in northern Colorado.
