Parents upset over how Bibles distributed after school

FORT COLLINS - It's an annual tradition at middle schools around the country: a one-day distribution of Bibles by Gideons International members to students as they leave school.

"They were taking pictures of our students," Webber Principal Sandra Bickel, who said she's aware of protocol violations from the Monday Bible giveaway, said.

"There was one girl who reported that she had politely said, 'No thank you,' a couple of times, and then a New Testament was placed in her basket, and that bothered her and her mother," Bickel said.

That mother wasn't alone. Another parent, who didn't want 9NEWS to use her name, said her son was harassed into taking a Bible. She says she doesn't believe strangers should be outside of schools handing materials out to children - and she doesn't want them talking to her son about religion.

"The Gideons, just as any public organization, has the right to be on public grounds," Danielle Clark, communications director for Poudre School District, said. "And when they're outside of the school, and outside of the school building, there's very little that we can do."

The school has a legal document on hand from the Gideons. The document states that they have First Amendment rights to be on public sidewalks.

School officials will talk with Gideons members before next year's distribution and let them know that perception matters, Bickel said.
