Former Broncos defensive back sentenced for stealing money from women

GOLDEN - Former Denver Bronco Mike Harden was sentenced to six years in prison Friday in Jefferson County District Court.

Harden was an outstanding defensive back for the Broncos. He is now in a wheelchair, complaining of back and neck injuries.

The former football player was convicted of stealing more than $64,000 from several women he knew.

He pleaded guilty last May to two counts of

felony theft. Prosecutors dropped 17 other counts.

Harden's sentence in a halfway house to Community Corrections was revoked in April 2003, because he was violating the rules of his sentence. He was required by the community corrections provider in Jeffco not to have any outside bank accounts and to limit his spending to approved locations.

He was terminated by community corrections staff for having money in checking accounts outside their system, explained Lee Harrell, Jefferson County prosecutor. Anyone in their system has to declare money to be used to pay restitution, and they were able to find that he had a lot of money stashed in other accounts.

In March 2003, Harden was arrested for having a lot of deposits and withdrawals in a checking account and for spending money at unauthorized places. He had two outside bank accounts.

Between Jan. 2000 and May 2001, Harden stole checks and credit cards and forged checks. He opened several credit card accounts in his name or the names of his women friends.

Harden will serve his sentence in a facility in Canon City.
