COLORADO, USA — There are approximately 4 million nurses in the U.S., but by 2020, that's not going to be nearly enough.
The World Health Organization is projecting a nursing shortage of 1 million nurses by 2020 — next year!
As we celebrate the nursing profession this week (National Nurses Week is May 6-12), I thought it would be great to learn more from nurses about their own experiences in the field.
In the video above, Candy McKenna and Vicki Zach — two of the many amazing nurses I have been fortunate enough to work with in the emergency department — shared how the nursing shortage affects their work environment, favorites parts of being a nurse, why they chose to be nurses and how they handle difficult situations like losing a patient.
Their inspiring stories will hopefully help others choose this important profession.
I also wanted to give a big thank you to all of the nurses who are providing excellent care for our patients.
I know my job as an ER doctor is so much better because I get to work with the best nurses in the world!
Happy Nurses Week!
