Update: Korean War POW loses $140K in scam

Three weeks after 9Wants to Know exposed the men accused of scamming elderly citizens out of thousands of dollars, donations from 9NEWS viewers were handed to one of the victims who lost $140,000.
In the months after losing the money, Carpenter said he’s been having trouble sleeping.

AURORA - Three weeks after 9Wants to Know exposed the men accused of scamming elderly citizens out of thousands of dollars, donations from 9NEWS viewers were handed to one of the victims who lost $140,000.

"I sure do thank you so much," Joe Carpenter said, after receiving an $8,300 check from the Denver Center for Crime Victims. "It's a tough lesson to learn. I hope that folks will wake up and pay attention. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is."

Carpenter, a Korean War POW, lost his life savings after he was approached by two scam artists at a grocery store parking lot in Aurora last year.

In February, 9Wants to Know confronted one of the suspects accused of scamming Carpenter and several other senior citizens in the metro area.

Clarence Fields and Eric Brown are expected to face numerous felony charges. Both are currently incarcerated and are waiting for their next court appearances.

The DCCV agreed to accept viewer donations without and fees and is still receiving contributions to Carpenter on its website.

Carpenter said he will use the money to pay for some medical bills after a minor stroke last month.
