A 31-year-old man accidently drowned in Fort Collins' Poudre River, the Larimer County Coroner said on Tuesday.

The body of Cordell Starkey was found on Sunday in the river near Legacy Park. According to the Larimer County Coroner, Starkey's cause of death was asphyxia by drowning. His death was ruled accidental.

Fort Collins Police Services said in a release that a group of people who had just met Starkey on June 21 at Legacy Park called officers to say they met a man, whom they only knew as "Cordell", but they hadn't seen him in several hours. They told police he was intoxicated and may have gone floating on the river.

Officers checked the area and contacted local hospitals, but they were unable to find Cordell or find any witnesses to confirm his last known location.

Starkey's body was found three days later in the Poudre River near Legacy Park.

Anyone with information, who has not already spoken to police, should contact Detective Jeff Laguna at 970-221-6558.
