Aurora Police officer fatally shoots fugitive wanted in attempted homicide, police say

The shooting happened Thursday morning in the 300 block of South Ironton Street in Aurora.

AURORA, Colo. — An Aurora Police Department SWAT officer shot and killed a man wanted in an attempted homicide on Thursday morning in the 300 block of South Ironton Street, according to police.

The shooting happened at 11:51 a.m. in the area near East Alameda Avenue and South Havana Street, as Aurora Police SWAT and the Denver Police Department's fugitive unit were attempting to take the suspect into custody, said Aurora Police Division Chief Kevin Barnes.

No officers were injured. The suspect was taken to a hospital and was in the ICU, Barnes said. The man died on Saturday, police said.

The suspect was wanted in an attempted homicide that occurred near 48th Avenue and Colorado Boulevard on May 5 in Denver. Denver Police identified the suspect in the attempted homicide as Kilyn Lewis, 37.

Aurora Police SWAT and DPD officers tailed the man to an apartment building parking lot on Ironton Street, which is where the shooting happened, Barnes said.

Pamela Johnson, who lives nearby, said she didn't hear anything before walking out her door to be met by Aurora police officers.

"What happened? What?" Johnson said, recalling her initial reaction. "What did I miss? Clearly I missed something. Anything but it must be something bad because there’s a lot of police activity."

Despite a large presence, Johnson said she wasn't phased. She said since she moved in three months ago, gunshots have become the noise of the neighborhood.

"Just like two months ago, not even two months ago, there was a bunch of shell casings near our car," Johnson said. "My boyfriend went to make sure nothing hit. And there were a lot of shots that night. But yeah, we hear shots all the time."

It was not clear what circumstances led to the shooting or whether the suspect was armed.

The officer who shot the suspect was put on administrative leave. The officer has been with Aurora Police since 2011 and has been on the SWAT team for eight years, Barnes said.

The 18th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team was investigating the shooting.
