Friends and families honor loved ones at King Soopers shooting memorial event in Boulder

People at different stages of grieving shared stories and songs about the 10 lives the Boulder community lost on March 22, 2021.

BOULDER, Colo. — Three years after a horrific tragedy at a King Soopers in Boulder, Colorado, tears are still flowing as people continue to process their pain.

The city hosted a memorial service Friday night where the community could gather and remember the 10 people who were killed on March 22, 2021.

"So many of us woke up today with the weight of that day heavy on our minds and that's a shared experience with many in our community," Boulder Mayor Aaron Brockett said.

During the service, friends and families of the 10 people who lost their lives shared stories and songs in their loved ones' memories.

"This one's for Susie," Suzanne Fountain's partner said before singing an emotional song he wrote for her.

"Just being around her, you felt like you were getting a warm hug, you felt understood and she was my best friend," Lynn Murray's daughter said, while reflecting on her mother.

Those touched by loss reflected on the time spent with each person and wondering why there wasn't more time.

"No one tells you how to explain something like this to your kids," Kevin Mahoney's daughter shared. "We talk about Grandpa Mahoney all the time. I tell my daughter that whenever she’s scared she can call on him for help."

"This year I turn an age he’ll never be," Kirstin Brooks, sister of officer Eric Talley, said. "I'm his younger sister and this year I'll be a year older. He didn’t get to live that long. He was robbed of that chance."

Bob Olds, Rikki Olds' uncle, reminded people attending the service that there is still work to be done in bringing the person responsible for so much pain and grief to justice.

"This is my fight," Olds said. "Fight for Rikki."

Mayor Brockett said the city of Boulder will always provide a space where people can grieve and say the names of the 10 who tragically died on March 22, 2021.

He said continuing to honor their legacies is how the community will keep them alive.
