Larimer County Coroner: Chronic alcohol use caused CSU football legend's death

FORT COLLINS, Colo. — Former NFL and Colorado State University linebacker Clark Haggans died of complications of chronic alcohol use, the Larimer County Coroner's Office announced Monday.

Haggans was found June 19, 2023, in a private residence in Fort Collins. His death date was listed as June 17. He was 46.

According to a Colorado State University release published after his death, Haggans had returned in recent years to Fort Collins.

Haggans was a college standout at CSU, where he played defensive end in 1996-99. His 33 career sacks remains a school record. He was inducted into the Colorado State University Athletics Hall of Fame in 2015.
