11-year-old boy dies after truck overturns, ends up in creek in Colorado

The crash happened Saturday night, the Clear Creek County Sheriff's Office said.

CLEAR CREEK COUNTY, Colo. — An 11-year-old boy who died Saturday after the truck he was riding in went off the road and landed in Clear Creek has been identified by the coroner as Octavio Ruiz Jr.

The Clear Creek County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) said the crash happened around 9 p.m. The truck exited Interstate 70 at Exit 232, which is the exit for Empire, went off the exit ramp and ended up submerged in the creek.

When deputies arrived, they found two women who had cuts to their faces and a man running up the embankment yelling for help, the sheriff's office said.

The boy was trapped in the submerged truck, deputies said. Officers from Idaho Springs and Georgetown's police departments, Clear Creek deputies and a bystander jumped into the cold water to free the boy, according to CCSO.

The boy was caught between a boulder and the truck, the sheriff's office said. After a little while, first responders lifted the truck enough for an officer to pull the boy out, CCSO said.

Rescue crews began resuscitation efforts, but the boy was declared dead upon arriving at the hospital, deputies said.

The sheriff's office initially reported Octavio's age as 12. The Clear Creek County Coroner's Office said on Tuesday that he was 11.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
