Club Q survivor reflects on one-year mark

One year after he was shot twice while inside the Colorado Springs LGBTQ+ bar, Ed Sanders is continuing to fight against hate.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — A man who was shot twice while inside Club Q one year ago is continuing to honor the lives that were lost that night.

Monday marks one year since five people were killed and another 17 were injured in a shooting at the Club Q nightclub in Colorado Springs.

One of those that survived is Ed Sanders. The 64-year-old was shot twice inside the bar.

"Once in the leg, [it] took a scoop out of my leg," Sanders explained. " Then the back wound went in and exploded but the bullet ricocheted off my rib and saved my heart so I really escaped somehow, miraculously."

Sanders' friends Derrick Rump and Daniel Aston were among the five who were killed.

"Well she fell in my arms basically when we all got hit," Sanders recalled of another victim, Kelly Loving. "We tried to talk her into breathing and give her some last words of comfort that she could hear. I recognized her face the next day when they published the pictures. She was family too. I didn't know her but I feel a connection to her. "

Sanders has since formed a relationship with Loving's sister. On Monday, which was also Transgender Remembrance Day, Sanders attended an event to remember Loving and others in the community who have been murdered.

"Can we all say Kelly Loving? Kelly Loving!" An organizer yelled to the crowd at the event "The other is Daniel Davis Aston. Those two lives were stolen form us one year today. "

Sanders said he attended on Monday for those who can't and to stand up for all that was taken.

"This incident was an attack on trans people, two trans people were killed and it was Trans Day of Remembrance," Sanders said. "We’ve got to fight it. We’ve got to fight all that."

Sanders had been visiting Club Q since it opened 20 years ago.

"The whole Club Q it was like going to see family whenever I went out and probably knew half of the people in there," he said.

He said he's going to continue to honor Loving and the others killed that night every day.
