Expect road closures, delays through Boulder Canyon as crews repair damage from 2013 floods

Stretches of Highway 119 between Boulder and Nederland will be closed weekdays in two-hour intervals until August.

BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. — Drivers trying to get between Boulder and Nederland for the next few months may run into road closures and delays due to an ongoing project to help repair damage from the 2013 floods.

CDOT will be intermittently closing parts of a 15 mile stretch of Highway 119 for rock blasting.

The work will primarily be done in two-hour windows from 9 - 11 a.m. and 1 - 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. The highway will be completely closed during those times.

CDOT said to also anticipate various long-term single-lane closures that could add 15 to 30 minutes to commute times.

During rock blasting, the Boulder Canyon trail will be closed. CDOT said that a few times a week, the trail will also be closed for longer than the blasting windows.

Work is anticipated to be completed by August 2019.

The repairs CDOT is hoping to complete include:

  • resurfacing 13 miles of highway and entirely replacing two miles of highway
  • building concrete islands to improve the roundabout in Nederland
  • installing new highway directional and safety signage
  • replacing multiple pipes conveying stormwater drainage under the highway
  • scaling rock in selected areas to reduce rockfalls on the highway
  • repairing soft shoulder areas immediately adjacent the highway
  • replacing 29,000 linear feet of concrete or metal guardrail
  • excavating areas where the slope had failed in the storm
  • redesigning and widening specific sections of the roadway
  • reconstructing embankments
  • re-establishing native grass seed and erosion control to slopes that were disturbed during emergency recovery work.

The project is estimated to cost $31 million.
