Suspect drives at officers, leads pursuit that ends in south Littleton, Englewood PD says

Officers took David Sonsalla into custody after he led officers on a pursuit that ended in a crash, Englewood Police said.

LITTLETON, Colo. — A shooting involving Englewood police officers turned into a pursuit and crash that ended in south Littleton around noon on Monday.

An Englewood Police spokesperson said officers fired shots at 3325 South Santa Fe Drive, which is just north of West Hampden Avenue. A map showed that location is a storage facility.

Police said officers were called to the facility for a report of a suspicious incident. Other calls for service had previously been reported at the facility, and it was an "area of focus" for officers, police said.

Officers tried contacting a man and woman related to the suspicious incident. The man, who was in the driver's seat of a car, did not comply and drove toward Englewood officers, who in turn fired their guns at him, police said.

The car then sped off from the shooting scene and led officers on a pursuit down South Santa Fe Drive. The driver being pursued drove southbound in the northbound lanes of South Santa Fe Drive toward the end of the pursuit, police said. The car crashed into two other vehicles at the intersection of West Mineral Avenue and South Santa Fe Drive, six miles from the location where shots were fired.

Two people involved in the crash were taken to a hospital with minor injuries, according to police.

The driver of the suspect vehicle, 39-year-old David Sonsalla, was also rushed to a hospital suffering from a gunshot wound, police said. He was treated and released to police custody, and was being taken to the Arapahoe County jail, Englewood police said. It's not known if Sonsalla was shot by officers or shot himself, police said.

Police in Littleton said the crash forced the closure of the eastbound lanes of West Mineral Avenue at South Santa Fe Drive. A Littleton Police spokesperson said the closure would last for "quite some time."

Sky9 was over the scene at noon. The video showed numerous law enforcement vehicles at the crash scene and caution tape surrounding the scene stretching from the RTD light rail bridge over Mineral Avenue and around police vehicles that were blocking at least one lane of South Santa Fe Drive.

The woman who was at the storage facility with Sonsalla was taken into custody at the storage facility on unrelated warrants, police said. Police would not share the identity of that woman or state if she would be charged in relation to the "suspicious incident."

The Critical Incident Response Team was on scene as they investigate all shootings involving a law enforcement officer. Englewood Police said their internal investigation into the shooting has also started.
