Train derails in northern Colorado, crews respond to diesel spill

The train derailed west of Madison Avenue in Loveland early Wednesday. The railroad called in a hazmat contractor to take care of a diesel spill.

LOVELAND, Colo. — A train, made up of two locomotives and three cars, derailed in northern Colorado early Wednesday morning.

The derailment happened in Loveland, west of Madison Avenue and north of East 8th Street, according to Loveland Police. The second locomotive of the train derailed and a fuel tank was punctured, according to Julie Slagle with OmniTrax.

The railroad called in their own hazmat contractor to take care of the diesel spill, according to Slagle. The spill, which was hundreds of gallons, according to Loveland Fire, was contained and did not reach the nearby waterway.

The train was carrying sugar, according to Slagle.

The train is operated by Great Western Railway of Colorado, according to Loveland Police.

No injuries had been reported from the derailment, police said.

A locomotive was brought in to help remove the train cars. Loveland Fire said the tracks were cleared just before noon Wednesday.
