Mary Louise Lee: Letter to my 18-year-old self

It’s the time of year when kids are graduating.  Students are getting a lot of advice, before venturing off to college and the real world.

It’s the time of year when kids are graduating.

Students are getting a lot of advice, before venturing off to college and the real world.

Think back to when you were eighteen, what advice do you wish you would have gotten? Looking back, what advice would you give your teenage self?

We asked Denver’s first lady, Mary Louise Lee, to write a letter to her 18-year-old self.

Here you are, 18-years-old and you’re about to graduate. You’ve achieved a lot in your eighteen years and quite a bit within this year -- student council president, choir, drama, and being crowned prom queen, and making your professional debut at the Denver Center for Performing Arts. Your parents have done a wonderful job to be the bright, confident well-mannered person you are. Take the life lessons, mom and dad taught you and don’t take for granted the time spent with loved ones, because life is short and you don’t know what the future will hold. Think before you act because your actions today will dictate your character for your children tomorrow. Know what god has for you is for you, and don’t allow boys or anyone else to take away your joy, and make sure you don’t lose focus on what you want in life. College will be some of the best years of your life, enjoy them, work hard – make lifelong friends, make yourself proud – and most of all, believe in yourself as I believe in you.
