Ocean Journey to reopen as Downtown Aquarium

DENVER - The fish are still there. In fact, they never left; neither did a gorgeous trio of endangered Sumatran tigers. Trouble is, a lot of people thought Ocean Journey went under three years ago.

Landry's, better known for its chain of seafood restaurants, bought the financially struggling Ocean Journey two years ago and planned major upgrades."We want to bring new life into this aquarium," said Scot Hulgan, general manager at the aquarium.Ocean Journey never closed, but visitation hasn't exactly been strong. "There's the perception that the facility was closed down prior to when we bought it," said Hulgan.Construction is everywhere. New exhibits are being added, a restaurant is nearing completion, and existing exhibits are undergoing upgrades.Landry's is optimistic Denver can be home to a successful major aquarium."We have a good track record with major aquariums down in Houston and we feel like with the touches we're adding we can get that repeat visitation," said Hulgan.
