Colorado family cleaning up after 6th vehicle in 6 years crashes into property

Dave and Stephanie Kott said they've contacted city and county leaders multiple times asking them to help make the area safer.

BAILEY, Colo. — A driver walked away with minor injuries after their car smashed into a house in Park County Saturday, according to witnesses. But the home has a gaping hole in the side of it now, and the family that lives there said they feel like sitting ducks.

Dave and Stephanie Kott bought their house in Bailey a little more than six years ago. Six people have crashed into their property since.

The most recent crash happened while the two were enjoying a quiet night inside.

“Of course, I heard it and felt it,” Stephanie said. “I thought, here we go again.”

“I've always thought one of these days they're going to hit the house, and then it happened,” Dave said.

Dave was upstairs above the garage watching TV when he looked out the window and saw a car sticking out of the side of his home. The crash was captured on home security video.

“It was a violent crash,” Dave said. “It was probably airborne twice and then it crashed into the house. It's just unbelievable.”

Dave and Stephanie believe the driver was speeding through the area -- something they see quite often.

“Just slowing down would have fixed the problem,” Stephanie said. “There was no ice or snow that day.”

This wasn’t the first time someone has crashed into their property.

“We've had at least six since we've lived here,” Stephanie said.

“We have video of a truck that came into the yard, hit the stop sign and knocked it down, drove around several times, and then took out one of our small trees,” she said.

Dave and Stephanie said they've contacted city and county leaders multiple times asking them to help make the area safer.

“I kind of just feel like they're shunning us, you know, like it's not their problem,” Dave said. “Nobody's died yet, I guess.”

They hope it never comes to that. But right now, they don't feel protected inside or outside their own home.

“I haven't felt safe in a long time,” Dave said.

9NEWS reached out to Park County Commissioner Amy Mitchell about the issue. She said the director of operations is planning to review the site in the coming days and will take appropriate safety measures if needed.
