Driver squeezes car through fenced sidewalk, crashes into another car before taking off with flat tires

"I think the biggest concern was that somebody was going to get run over," said Devon Wittstruck, who recorded the hit-and-run near the 16th Street Mall in Denver.

DENVER — A person was caught on camera driving a Chrysler 300 through a fenced area of a sidewalk at the 16th Street Mall in Denver, then crashing into another car and driving off with flat tires.

9NEWS obtained footage of the Nov. 3 hit-and-run from Devon Wittstruck, who said he was on his way to dinner when he saw the car parked where the sidewalk crosses 16th Street.

The video initially shows a passenger getting out of the car.

"And then, instead of just backing up and trying to correct, [the driver] just tried to blast through another, you know, 70 yards of construction and fencing," Wittstruck said.

The driver's attempt to squeeze the car through a narrow area of the sidewalk between businesses and construction fencing left the car with some scratches and flat tires.

Wittstruck said the passenger, who exited the vehicle to help the driver navigate, almost got hurt too.

"And you can see in the video where she lurches forward, the door hits part of the fence and nearly just about snaps her arm," Wittstruck said. "And you know, she got it out in time, but it was… clearly the driver did not have control of the vehicle or any idea what she was supposed to be doing."

But the driver didn't stop there.

Watch the full raw video:

A second video from Wittstruck shows the car farther ahead on the sidewalk, this time between a different vehicle and an outside patio— the driver is seen moving the car forward and backward, crashing repeatedly into both the other vehicle and the business' property.

The video shows concerned people run toward the car, yelling for the driver to stop; however, the driver kept trying to get out onto the road.

“I think that was the biggest concern was that somebody was going to get run over," Wittruck said. "Fortunately, no one was hurt."

Finally, after a few tries— and crashing the bumper off the other car— the driver is seen speeding away from the scene, despite its flat tires.

The driver also left the passenger behind.

"The sad thing is, is that despite these efforts from her friend, whoever the driver was just decided to completely take off and leave her," Wittstruck said.

According to Wittstruck, Denver Police didn't get to the scene until 15 minutes after the driver left.

“Obviously, it is the textbook definition of a hit-and-run," Wittstruck said.

A spokesperson for the Denver Police Department said they aren't able to share more information about this case as it is still under investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867.
