AVON — Six homes have been declared uninhabitable after a fire at a condominium complex in Avon.

According to a release from the Eagle River Fire Protection District, firefighters were called out on a report of a fire at the Beaver Bench Condominium Complex on West Beaver Creek Blvd at around 11:30 a.m. Saturday. When they got there, they saw smoke and flames coming from a ground floor unit.

All of the residents and their pets were evacuated, but one person was taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Crews got the fire under control by around 1 p.m. They stayed there for a few more hours to conduct overhaul and check for hot spots.

In all, there are 18 units at the complex. The 12 that have not been declared uninhabitable will be re-evaluated after the investigation is finished and building officials say the homes are safe to re-enter.

About 15 people and several pets were displaced. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
