Teen airlifted to hospital after accident with freight train

WELD COUNTY – A teenage girl was seriously injured Thursday afternoon after she crashed into a freight train.

Authorities say at around 3:10 p.m. the teen, 16-year-old Nicole Bracht of LaPorte,was driving a 1990 Ford Bronco when she crashed into a Union Pacific train at Weld County Roads 52 and 17.Bracht was seriously injured and airlifted to the North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley.Two other teens were in the car. Chelsea Brown, 16, of Johnstown was transported to the hospital with moderate injuries, and 17-year-old Kathleen Holguin of Milliken was seriously injured after she was thrown through the windshield of the Bronco, authorities say. Holguin was not wearing a seatbelt.No one on the train was injured.Authorities say Bracht has been charged with two counts of careless driving causing injury and minor driver operated a motor vehicle with an unauthorized passenger. State law says a 16-year-old driver can only have one passenger under the age of 21.Authorities do not suspect that alcohol or drugs were factors.The roadwas closed at the scene of the accident and traffic was being diverted around the area for at time.
