Wing damage forces United flight to divert to Denver International Airport

United Flight 354 landed Monday evening at Denver International Airport to deal with a damaged wing slat.

DENVER — A United Airlines flight from San Francisco to Boston made a landing in Denver after experiencing an issue with a slat on one of the wings Monday evening.

"United Flight 354 diverted to Denver yesterday afternoon to address an issue with the slat on the wing of the aircraft," the airline said in a statement. "The flight landed safely and we arranged for another aircraft to take our customers to Boston."

There were 165 passengers onboard the Boeing 757-200, according to United.

The flight left San Francisco International Airport at 1:47 p.m. PST, according to FlightAware.com and landed at Denver International Airport at 5:21 p.m. MST.

Kevin Clarke, a passenger on the flight, told 9NEWS that the pilot got on the intercom shortly after taking off from San Francisco to tell the passengers about the issue with the wing slat.

"I immediately open the window and look out, and that's when I see the damage on the trailing edge of the slat," Clarke said. "Well, that's not good. But if the pilot thinks it's good to fly to Denver, we don't have much choice."

Slats are moveable panels on the front or leading edge of the wing and are used during takeoffs and landings. Clarke said his biggest concern was landing at DIA, but there weren't any issues.

The passengers unloaded from the airplane and boarded another aircraft that continued to Logan International Airport in Boston. The flight landed around 2:01 a.m. EST Tuesday morning, according to FlightAware.com.

The Federal Aviation Administration said Tuesday that it is investigating the incident.
