Wiens Fire that burned 150 acres in Douglas County 100% contained

The grass fire near Perry Park started around 12:30 p.m. on Friday.

PERRY PARK, Colo. — Pre-evacuation notices have been lifted and crews are focusing on mop-up efforts for a large grass fire Friday afternoon in southern Douglas County.

Larkspur Fire and Castle Rock Fire responded to the area of the 5500 block of South Perry Park Road after the fire started around 12:30 p.m.

As of 3:30 p.m., Douglas County Sheriff's Office communications director Deborah Takahara said the Wiens Fire was estimated to have burned 150 acres.

As of 4:45 p.m. the fire was 100% contained.

Pre-evacuation notices were sent to several hundred residents along Perry Park Road south of Tomah Road, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office said. Those pre-evacuation notices were lifted just after 3 p.m.

Sky9 flew over the wildfire Friday afternoon:

Takahara said that shifting winds were making it difficult to initially assess whether any structures were threatened and caused the fire to spread quickly in its early stages. Takahara said that winds were expected to die down by 4 p.m. Friday and that no structures were damaged.

A helicopter made several bucket-drops of water, which Takahara said had a significant effect on the flames.

Crews were expected to be on scene for several hours into Friday evening as they worked hot spots.

The cause is under investigation.

Eight agencies responded to the fire, including South Metro Fire Rescue, which sent six units to assist in battling the blaze, and the Douglas County Office of Emergency Management.
