Wyoming newborn tests positive for methamphetamine

GILLETTE, Wyo. (AP) - Gillette police say a newborn boy has been taken into protective custody after the baby and his mother tested positive for methamphetamine.

Prosecutors will review the case before deciding whether criminal charges will be filed against the baby's mother under the state child drug-endangerment law. The boy was born Friday morning at Campbell County Memorial Hospital. After observing the 30-year-old mother, nurses believed that she was under the influence of some sort of narcotics. Police say the mother then tested positive for methamphetamine and marijuana. She was not immediately arrested. The state's child drug-endangerment law, a felony, went into effect last July. The American Civil Liberties Union argues that prosecuting mothers for methamphetamine use during pregnancy is a misuse of the law.
