KUSA — For years, Ashley Sorensen's life has been all about the team.

She's leaving the military in December, and it's been hard to break out of the "us" mentality.

"We get out and we're like, 'wait I have to say 'I' in an interview'," she said.

That is just one of the challenges Valor Bridge helps veterans overcome to get a leg up in the private sector.

The Denver nonprofit chooses a handful of veteran "fellows" to go through a 10-week course about getting ahead in the business world.

They take classes on marketing, finance, insurance and everything else under the "business" umbrella. They also get paired with a one-on-one mentor who will stick with them even after they graduate in October.

For Sorensen, Valor Bridge helped her find her voice outside a team environment. She's decided to dive into the world of finance.

"You kind of forget and you kinda get lost initially and this is really the first opportunity where you get to find yourself," she said.
