Denver — When you have one of the best college lacrosse players ever playing for you, sometimes the rest of the team can get overshadowed.

So the University of Denver has gotten defensive.

The Pioneers are playing defense like they never have thanks a pair of Dylans -- Dylan Gaines and Dylan Johnson.

"I take a lot of pride in it," Gaines said. "If you just stop guys from scoring, that's what makes us a good defense."

"We're always together," Johnson said. "We live together, we're roommates, we take classes together. I mean, there's not much time spent apart."

The happiest Pioneer to have this twosome on the team is goalie Josh Matte.

"It's incredible. They're two massive guys who are kind of what we want to be known as the tough guy defense," Matte said. "They help us out and are really scary for other teams to go against."

The Pioneers are actually making history on defense. At 7.46 goals per game, they are the best in the country this season.

Twenty seven goals in their last five games is the Pioneers' best stretch since 1970 and holding opponents to six or less goals seven times has actually never happened at the university and DU has been playing lacrosse since 1966.

DU will take on Marquette in the first round of the Big East tournament on Thursday. This is a rematch from a game last week that the Pioneers won 7-4, another low scoring game.
