Roosevelt successfully defends 5A girls basketball championship

The Roughriders went back-to-back by defeating Northfield 69-63 in the Class 5A state title game.

DENVER — The 5A girls basketball crown is staying put.

Roosevelt went back-to-back as the state's best by defeating Northfield 69-63 in the Class 5A title game on Saturday morning at the Denver Coliseum. It is the second title in program history for the Roughriders, as the Nighthawks were making their first championship appearance.

Kyla Holilier led Roosevelt with a game-high 26 points, while Ryanne Bahnsen-Price scored 15 and Maddie Moyers contibuted 10.

Northfield was led by Madison Bethel's team-high 16 points, plus 14 each from Nashara Ellerbee and Aliyah Herron.

Roosevelt went 26-2 overall this season in route to the championship. Northfield finished 24-4 as runner-up.
