Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - The Pittsburgh Pirates activated outfielder Jose Tabata from the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday.
A strained left oblique sent Tabata to the DL in late May. He was batting .272 with two homers and six RBI through 36 games prior to the injury.
In a corresponding move, the Pirates optioned pitcher Brandon Cumpton to Triple-A Indianapolis. The right-hander was summoned to start Tuesday's home game against the Philadelphia Phillies. He allowed three runs and six hits over 5 2/3 innings in the 3-1 loss.
The Pirates also announced that pitcher Phil Irwin is expected to be sidelined approximately two months after having ulnar nerve transposition surgery on his right elbow.
