Strange-but-true story of truck heist at Broncos' training camp hotel parking lot

Two trucks belonging to the same player were stolen at virtually the same time. Keys left in one truck contributed to the theft of the other.

INDIANAPOLIS — Maybe if the NFL players union heard the rest of the story, it would have given the Broncos a higher grade from its players survey on work conditions.

The Denver Broncos got a right-down-the-middle No. 16 overall ranking from the second annual players survey – up from No. 20 a year ago.

In its comments, the NFLPA wrote in its overall summary: “A new facility will correct most of the issues the players expressed, like the size of the locker room; but there are other areas that require addressing, which are not related to the facilities. For example … (players) reported there were multiple cars stolen from the parking lot of the mandated team hotel during training camp.”

9NEWS did some digging. Turns out, sources say, it was two trucks that were stolen at virtually the same time. The trucks belonged to the same player who accidentally left his keys in one of the vehicles of the secured parking lot at an off-site hotel. A click of a key fob chain led to the keys of the second truck.

There was no break-in to alert security. The car thieves simply drove up as if they were family, got in the two trucks and drove off.

You can’t make this up.

The player, 9NEWS has learned, is no longer with the team.
