ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Broncos have expressed interest in free-agent quarterback Sam Darnold, a league source confirmed to 9NEWS.
The Minnesota Vikings are also interested in Darnold, who after starting the first five seasons of his NFL career served as a backup to Brock Purdy for the San Francisco 49ers last year. One report added the Washington Commanders as also being in on Darnold talks.
Of all the quarterbacks in the 2024 free-agent class, Darnold figures to have the greatest upside and fit the best with the offensive system directed by Denver's head coach Sean Payton. While Darnold has the potential to become an elite NFL starting quarterback -- he was the No. 3 overall pick of the New York Jets in 2018 -- he has been hindered by turnovers. Darnold has 63 touchdown passes and rushed for 13 more, but he's also had 56 interceptions and 13 lost fumbles in his 66-game career (21-35 as a starter).
The Broncos also have other quarterback options.
Among the free-agent quarterbacks still available are Jimmy Garoppolo, Ryan Tannehill and Mason Rudolph.
Once they add a veteran quarterback -- trading for one is another possibility -- the Broncos will have him compete with Jarrett Stidham for the starting job, The Broncos may also use their No. 12 overall draft selection to take a quarterback.
