Russell Wilson forgets pick, coach's rebuke, leads Broncos to victory

The Broncos quarterback was scolded by coach Payton for poor first throw, but then played well in victory. The reward was wife Ciara delivering their baby daughter.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — You want baby news? We’ve got your baby news.

Social media followers already knew Russell Wilson’s wife Ciara delivered their baby girl at a Los Angeles hospital soon after Wilson led the Broncos to a 24-7 win Sunday against the Chargers at SoFi Stadium.

“His wife had a baby, and (left guard) Ben (Powers’) wife had a baby as well,’’ said Broncos head coach Sean Payton. “Ben doesn’t have 2.8 million followers, though, so less people know about Ben’s baby. Anyways, those two guys both had baby girls.”

Ciara and family were outside the SoFi visiting locker room nearly an hour after the game. Wilson visited with his family and posed for cellphone photos before heading back into the locker room. Some time after that, Ciara and Russell were on their way to a hospital.

“It was a good day for the Broncos, good day for the Wilson family,’’ Russell Wilson said at his weekly press conference Wednesday. Had Russ and Ciara’s 9-pound, 1-ounce daughter Amora Princess arrived a couple hours earlier, dad wouldn’t have taken paternity leave.

“I would have gone to the game,’’ Wilson said. “We’ve got winning to do.”

As for football, Wilson has previously said he wants to be coached hard, he wants tough coaching and he got it after he threw low and behind receiver Marvin Mims Jr. on a sideline pattern on the first offensive play of the game Sunday. The throw allowed Chargers cornerback Michael Davis to snatch the ball away for an interception before Mims had a chance to gather it in. The interception gave Los Angeles the ball at the Broncos’ 13 yard line.

On the jumbo screen high above the SoFi playing field, Payton was seen chewing out Wilson pretty good for not throwing the ball out in front of Mims.

“Yeah, the first play of the game, that’s not what we wanted,’’ Wilson said. “You always want to be coached hard, you always want to make the right plays. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out the way we wanted to. The good thing is we’ve got a lot of game left. We’ve got a great defense – they did a great job of stopping them there and getting the ball back and then it was over.

“You’ve got to have amnesia in this game. … If you’re going to play bold – unfortunately that was just a crappy play but I think the best thing was we moved on and that was already gone.”

Indeed, the defense held as Chargers head coach Brandon Staley bypassed a sure three points in exchange for going for a touchdown on fourth down. In-com-plete. Broncos ball, still 0-0.

Wilson then finished the game 21 of 32 for 224 yards and two touchdowns. So Payton’s rebuke of Wilson was the proper method. Wilson, for his part, stood impassively but obediently watching and listening to his coach, as if the scolding bothered him not a bit.

“It’s good to be coached hard, you want that,’’ Wilson said. “You want to play my best at all times. Also, too, coach was like, ‘You know what to do. Just throw it, let’s go.’’’
