Sean Payton says Broncos beginning draft and free agency evaluation process next week

In other words, buzz about the Broncos moving up from No. 12 in the draft is nothing but guesswork.

LAS VEGAS — At the Senior Bowl a week or so ago, social media started spreading speculation that Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton would try to move up from his team’s No. 12 overall draft spot to take one of the Big Three quarterbacks – Caleb Williams, Drake Maye or Jayden Daniels.

Which was news to Payton.

“Let me ask this question: We haven’t even begun the draft meetings,’’ Payton said in a walk-and-talk interview Friday morning with 9NEWS as he was rushed from one Radio Row stage to another. “They start Monday. So anything you’ve read and heard, it starts on Monday.”

Payton was making the rounds along Super Bowl Radio Row on Friday ostensibly to promote Zebra Technologies, which is the on-field tracking provider for the NFL. Surrounded by marketing handlers, Payton walked briskly from the FanDuel Up & Adams set -- where he shared a couch with Giants’ past and present quarterbacks Eli Manning and Daniel Jones -- to outside Radio Row and an unused conference center where a golf court was waiting to take him to his next promotional destination.

But enough about technology tracking. No moving up from No. 12?

“I want you to go back and read the initial report,’’ Payton said. “And it’s coming from someone’s garage. My point is if you do the homework on it, I couldn’t tell you the jersey numbers of these guys.”

How about a quarterback from free agency?

“It all starts this next week,’’ Payton said. “So we haven’t even begun the process. We’re having to answer questions about a blogger.”
