What has happened since the last time San Francisco won a Super Bowl?

The San Francisco 49ers have made a couple of appearances in the big game but have not won a championship since 1995.

DENVER — Let's think back to 1995. I know, you just remembered about your old Tamagotchi. Trust me, your virtual pet is very dirty and hasn't been fed in 29 years. Plus, the batteries are probably dead by now.

This was the last time the San Francisco 49ers won a Super Bowl.

You probably remember of some of the names on that roster: Steve Young, Jerry Rice, Ricky Waters and yes, Prime Time himself, Deion Sanders.

The 1994-95 49ers are still considered one of the greatest teams of all time. The team's performance in Super Bowl XXIX was nothing short of spectacular, defeating the then San Diego Chargers 49-26. Young threw a Super Bowl record-setting six touchdowns.

Although the 49ers made it to the big game two more times since, they have fallen short of adding another Lombardi Trophy to their trophy case.

Now the 49ers are set to face the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII in Paradise, Nevada on Feb. 11, 2024.

As you can imagine, a few things have changed since 1995. Let's look at some of the big events in football that have happened since 1995:

  • The Jacksonville Jaguars and Carolina Panthers entered the league in 1995.
  • The Cleveland Browns moved to Baltimore, becoming the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens went on to win two Super Bowls (XXXV and XLVII).
  • The Oilers left Houston for Tennessee in 1997.
  • The Cleveland Browns resumed operations in 1999.

  • Houston got the expansion Houston Texans in 2002.
  • The NFL realigned the divisions in 2002, creating four divisions in each conference.
  • The Raiders moved from Los Angeles, to Oakland, then to Las Vegas.
  • The Philadelphia Eagles won their first Super Bowl. (LII).
  • The Tampa Bay Buccaneers won their first Super Bowl (XXXVII).
  • The verb "Tebowing."
  • The New England Patriots won six Super Bowls (XXXVI, XXXVIII, XXXXIX, XLIX, LI, LIII).
  • Tom Brady won a record seven Super Bowls (see above plus Super Bowl LV with Tampa Bay).
  • The Seattle Seahawks won their first Super Bowl (XLVIII, sorry Broncos fans).
  • The Rams moved from St. Louis, back to Los Angeles.
  • The Chargers moved from San Diego, back to Los Angeles.

To be fair, there have been notable events since the Chief's last won a Super Bowl:

  • Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift are dating.

That's about it.
