WASHINGTON — After years of waiting, SpongeBob SquarePants fans are getting their wish... "Sweet Victory" will be performed at the Super Bowl.
Nickelodeon announced new details Thursday about its alternate Super Bowl broadcast and revealed that for the first-time ever, an animated SpongeBob and Patrick Star will join CBS Sports analyst Nate Burleson and play-by-play announcer Noah Eagle in the booth to call the game. Meanwhile, Sandy Cheeks will handle sideline duty.
The network also confirmed the broadcast will feature an opening segment from Allegiant Stadium re-creating SpongeBob's iconic "Sweet Victory" performance.
SpongeBob and his cast of friends performed that song during the TV show's "Bubble Bowl" episode.
After the death of SpongeBob Squarepants creator Stephen Hillenburg in November 2018, fans urging Maroon 5 to perform the song "Sweet Victory" during 2019 Super Bowl halftime show.
Fans kind of got their wish.
During Maroon 5's Halftime show, a clip from 'Sweet Victory' briefly popped up with SpongeBob opening up Travis Scott's "Sicko Mode."
But that was it. SpongeBob and friends disappeared as quick as they arrived. And fans weren't very happy.
Hopefully Nickelodeon's Super Bowl broadcast gives "Sweet Victory" the full time it deserves.
When is the Super Bowl?
Super Bowl LVIII (which stands for Super Bowl 58) kicks off on Sunday, Feb. 11 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada, around 6:30 p.m. Eastern (5:30 p.m. Central Time, 4:30 p.m. Mountain Time and 3:30 p.m. Pacific Time).
What channel is the Super Bowl on?
The Super Bowl will air on CBS and there will be a kids-focused presentation of the game on Nickelodeon, marking the first time the Super Bowl has had an alternate broadcast on a separate network.
Nickelodeon's broadcast, featuring "Sweet Victory," begins at 6:30 p.m. Eastern.
