DENVER — Fresh off their 5-1 win against the Edmonton Oilers, the Colorado Avalanche now focus their attention on Winnipeg.

The Avalanche have not been playing their best hockey over the past month. Colorado was three points behind the Dallas Stars for the division lead at the beginning of April. Losses to Columbus, Edmonton, Dallas and Winnipeg saw Colorado drop from the second seed in the division to the third seed.

A first round matchup against Winnipeg was worrisome, even before last week's 7-0 loss to the Jets. Colorado has now gone 0-3 against the Winnipeg Jets this season, being outscored 17-4.

While these numbers look bad, they are not an indicator of what is to come. Rather, they are a reminder of the work the Avalanche have cut out for them.

Look back at the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs. There was a similar situation in the Eastern Conference with the Tampa Bay Lightning playing the Columbus Blue Jackets. Tampa Bay had gone 3-0 against Columbus that season, outscoring the Blue Jackets 17-3. Columbus then shocked the league by beating the Lightning in a four-game sweep.

First round schedule:

  • Game 2 - Colorado at Winnipeg - Tuesday, April 23 at 7:30 p.m.
  • Game 3 - Winnipeg at Colorado - Friday, April 26 at 8 p.m.
  • Game 4 - Winnipeg at Colorado - Sunday, April 28 at 12:30 p.m.

  • Game 6 - Winnipeg at Colorado - Thursday, May 2 - TBD *
