Colorado kicks off fishing season: Here's how to buy a fishing license

The Colorado fishing season runs from March 1, 2024, through March 31, 2025. Colorado Parks and Wildlife has stocked 90 million fish in the state.

DENVER — Colorado Parks and Wildlife is kicking off the new fishing season in the state.

Colorado fishing licenses for the 2025-25 season, which runs from March 1, 2024, until March 31, 2025, are on sale now.

An adult annual license for a Colorado resident is $41.83 plus tax, with discounts for seniors, youth and people who are low income. A one-day license is $16.33 for Colorado residents.

Children under the age of 16 are allowed to fish with one rod for free in Colorado, according to Colorado Park and Wildlife regulations.

Colorado also requires anglers to purchase a Habitat Stamp for $12.15 once per season with any hunting or fishing license. This money goes toward a program that helps protect fish and wildlife habitats across the state.

Licenses can be purchased online, by phone at 1-800-244-5613, at local CPW offices or at authorized sales agents across Colorado.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) stocks 90 million fish into Colorado streams, rivers and lakes annually. CPW said fishers have the possibility of catching 35 species of warm-water and cold-water fish.

"CPW biologists and volunteers will soon be spawning fish to replenish our walleye and saugeye fisheries,” said CPW aquatic section manager Matt Nicholl. "Our hatcheries also stock Front Range waters with trout while water temperatures remain cool for added angling opportunities."

CPW also offers a variety of classes and other events for those who want to get into fishing or those who want to get better at it. CPW fishing classes, events, seminars and tournaments are posted on the Fishing News and Events web page.

“Spring is around the corner, and so is the opportunity to get out and enjoy the active, outdoor Colorado lifestyle by going fishing," said CPW Angler Education Coordinator Andre Egli. "If you are new to fishing, there are many classes offered around the state. Classes are available for new anglers, families, or seasoned anglers that want to learn a new technique like fly fishing."
