Aggressive driver caused fatal E-470 crash, authorities say

Troopers are looking for the driver of a white sedan who was reportedly involved in a road rage incident with the driver of the vehicle that rolled.

THORNTON, Colo. — The man killed in a crash early Monday morning on eastbound E470 slammed into the wreckage of another vehicle that had rolled over after the driver lost control during a suspected road rage incident.

Witnesses told troopers with the Colorado State Patrol that the driver of a Toyota 4Runner was engaging in aggressive behaviors with numerous vehicles on Interstate 25 before he exited at E-470 around 5:45 a.m. On the off-ramp, the driver continued to engage in high-speed and aggressive driving with a white passenger vehicle, according to CSP.

The driver of the 4Runner, a 24-year-old man, lost control and rolled. His vehicle came to a final rest in the southbound lanes of E470 without making contact with any other vehicles, CSP said. After the 4Runner was stopped in the southbound lanes, a 50-year-old man in a Toyota Tacoma crashed into it, according to state patrol.

Since the crash occurred before sunrise, investigators said they're working to determine if the 4Runner had any working lights on it after it came to the rest in the roadway to determine how visible it was to approaching traffic.

Both drivers were taken to the hospital. The 50-year-old died from his injuries. The 24-year-old driver remains in the hospital being treated for his injuries.

Crews from Colorado State Patrol and Broomfield Police are investigating the crash. They're working to identify the driver of the white sedan who was reported to have been involved in a road rage incident with the driver of the 4Runner just before the crash. Investigators are asking anyone with information on this incident including the identity of the driver of the white sedan, to call the Colorado State Patrol at 303-239-4522.

All lanes of eastbound E-470 were closed between Sheridan Parkway and Interstate 25, according to Broomfield Police. The road reopened around 9:30 a.m. Monday.
