Faster security lines expected after Denver airport opens new checkpoint

After a soft opening, 17 technologically-advanced security checkpoint lanes are officially opening to travelers at one of the world's busiest airports.

DENVER β€” Colorado's busiest airport is opening its first new security checkpoint in decades.

Denver International Airport (DIA) held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Monday morning to open its new West Security Checkpoint.

A major milestone in the Great Hall airport renovation project, the new state-of-the-art checkpoint is scheduled to officially open on Tuesday after a soft opening the last two weeks.

The checkpoint is located on the airport's sixth floor between Southwest and United Airlines. It will serve those with TSA Pre-Check, Clear and DEN Reserve.

There are three entrances into the west checkpoint β€” behind the United Airlines ticket counter, near Door 606, and near Door 600. The new west checkpoint will be open 4 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. daily.

Under construction for more than two years, the new checkpoint features 17 lanes with the latest security screening technology including facial-recognition and digital ID technology, and new digital signage.

The checkpoint will also have automatic bins, so TSA workers and travelers don't have to move them. All items must be placed in a bin including suitcases, backpacks, roller bags, and jackets. All passengers using the new lanes can leave their liquids (3.4 oz or less) as well as electronics in their carry-on even if they do not have TSA Pre-Check.

The west checkpoint joins the south and bridge security checkpoints at DIA.  The south checkout will remain open 24 hours. DEN Reserve is moving from bridge security to the west security checkpoint.

After the west checkpoint opens, the north checkpoint will permanently close as the airport prepares to extend the Level 6 east balcony needed to construct the east security checkpoint, which is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2025.

The entire $1.3 billion Great Hall airport renovation project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2027.
