‘Meticulous search’ for missing 87-year-old man yields no results

The Arvada man's pickup truck was found abandoned after crashing into a railcar in Golden. Police say there was blood inside the truck cab.
James Mitchell, 87, has been reported missing and is endangered.

A search that encompassed “several miles of paths and trails, rugged hillsides and residential areas” Friday morning did not yield a trace of 87-year-old James Mitchell, who has been missing since at least Thursday morning.

The Arvada man’s pickup truck was found abandoned and crashed into a railcar in Golden on Thursday morning. Golden Police say blood was found inside the truck cab.

Mitchell’s son later confirmed to police that his father was missing. He possibly suffers from dementia, according to Golden Police, and does not have his ID or cell phone with him.

“We were able to confirm with a family member that they hadn't heard from him and was in fact missing,” said Karlyn Tilley with Golden Police.

Golden Police said Friday afternoon that they’re continuing to investigate Mitchell’s disappearance, with help from numerous agencies including Alpine Search and Rescue.

“We are really unclear as to why he was in Golden and we are not sure what the connection is,” Tilley said.

At this point, members of the public are not being mobilized to join search parties.

Mitchell is described as 5 feet 10 inches and 180 pounds, with blue eyes and thinning gray hair.

He was last seen wearing a blue fleece vest, a black short-sleeved shirt, khaki cargo pants and black athletic shoes with Velcro closures.

“He was in very good shape for someone who is 87 years old and that’s why we have every hope we can find him,” Tilley said.

Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to call the Golden Police Department at 303-384-8045.
