Head-on crash in Idaho Springs injures 13 people, authorities say

The crash happened on Colorado Boulevard over Interstate 70 around 12:15 p.m. Police have reopened all closures.

IDAHO SPRINGS, Colo. — Thirteen people were injured when an SUV and a passenger van crashed head-on Thursday afternoon in Idaho Springs Thursday.

The Idaho Springs Police Department said the crash, which happened on Colorado Boulevard where it goes over Interstate 70, was reported just after 12:15 p.m.

Officers found that a black Mercedes Sprinter van had collided with a gray Toyota 4Runner SUV head-on and that there were numerous people injured.

Police said preliminary information indicated the driver of the van, a 33-year-old Aurora woman, was heading east on the overpass when she entered the westbound lane and hit the SUV.

The driver of the SUV was the only person in the vehicle, but there were 13 people in the van, according to police. Twelve of the people in the van were taken to the hospital in addition to the driver of the SUV. All of the injuries were minor, according to the Idaho Springs Fire Department.

Police said the van is owned by the 2nd Home Adult Community Center, where the occupants of the van live.

There was no indication that the driver was impaired, according to police, but she was cited for careless driving resulting in injury.

The overpass was temporarily closed after the crash.
