Yet another sinkhole opens up on Oxford Avenue

This is the fifth sinkhole to open up in this area since 2015.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Another sinkhole has opened up on a stretch of road that's seen its share of them.

The Englewood Police Department warned the public Thursday that there was a new sinkhole on Oxford Avenue near Santa Fe Drive, the fifth one in that area in eight years.

In 2015, Oxford Avenue caved in and swallowed a police SUV.

In 2018, another sinkhole took out a second SUV. A woman jumped out of the car at the last second.

In 2019 the sinkhole returned, but this time no cars fell in.

In all of those incidents, a storm sewer line that runs along Oxford Avenue got the blame.

In 2022, a small but deep sinkhole was discovered on Oxford Avenue west of Santa Fe Drive. That one was believed to have been caused by an abandoned manhole.

The one that developed Thursday after heavy rainfall looks big enough to swallow a car. The city has closed eastbound Oxford Avenue from Santa Fe Drive to where Windermere Street meets Navajo Street. Southbound Windermere Street is closed at Oxford Avenue.

According to a release, the City of Englewood expects repairs to be completed in one to two weeks.

The city said it has taken steps toward improving the city's stormwater system, including the development of a 15-year stormwater master plan and the investment of millions of dollars in infrastructure funded by increased stormwater utility rates.
