COLORADO, USA — Elisabeth Epps, an abolition activist and local attorney, won the Colorado primary for State House District 6, in Denver.
Epps faced centrist Katie March, a former historian and senior advisor to Democratic House Speaker State Rep. Alec Garnett, in the race. The Associated Press called the victory for Epps Thursday morning. An afternoon ballot count update showed March trailed Epps by more than 1,000 votes.
Early counts showed March had the lead after polls closed Tuesday night, though the margin became narrower with each update. March posted on Twitter that she has conceded.
Epps will face Republican Donald D. Howell, who has no primary challenger, in the Nov. 8 general election. It's unlikely a Republican would take a victory in this district, which includes Capitol Hill, Congress Park and Lowry.
Business groups put big money into the race to defeat Epps, a progressive who has called for abolishing the police, speaks out about renters' rights and supports a higher minimum wage.
"I represent the Democratic wing of the Democratic Party," Epps said previously. "My opponent (March) and I in this HD 6 race are two people, who in many other political systems, would not even be in the same political party, period."
