New improvements at Red Rocks this concert season

From November to March, crews at Red Rocks used time in the off-season to make improvements and upgrade safety.

DENVER — The Red Rocks concert season is officially in full swing, but the iconic venue could look a little different from the last time you were there.

Spokesperson Brian Kitts said crews were busy in the off-season from November to March making improvements.

The road on the south side of the venue has been repaved and parking lines are now in place. There's also a new berm with fencing and lighting, so it'll be safer for people coming up and down from shows.

New water filling stations can be found at the top plaza which was closed for most of last year. You can expect concession stands to be open up there as well this concert season. The top circle parking area was redone to fix some accessibility issues.

Red Rocks has also started using the Evolv Technology magnetometer system. It's a metal scanning device that helps to make the security lines go faster. Random bag searches will still happen, but the process is supposed to be a lot easier.

Kitts said the venue's restaurant, Ship Rock Grille, is being reconfigured. The bar will wrap around from the inside to the outside. All kitchen facilities have been converted from gas to electricity. The restaurant will open back up sometime in May.

In the next off-season, Kitts said the Visitor's Center will get an upgrade. After that work is done, fans can expect to see new memorabilia and exhibits there.

"This venue is now 83 years old. Things are much different than it was built in 1937 and opened in 1941," said Kitts. "What you’re seeing now is sort of a natural evolution, when it comes to safety, when it comes to what fans expect."

Where shows are concerned, Kitts said this year fans can expect more country music than ever before, dance and jam bands, as well as classic artists like James Taylor, John Fogerty and Diana Ross.

"This is looking like it's going to be one of Red Rock's most successful seasons ever. We're on schedule to have more than 200 shows," he said.

Kitts said last year Billboard named Red Rocks the number four most attended venue in the entire world and the number one amphitheater.
