500 guinea pigs living in 'deplorable' conditions rescued from breeder

The guinea pigs were severely overcrowded and lacking food and water, the rescue group said.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. — A Fort Collins animal rescue said on Monday that it's in need of donations and fosters after it rescued more than 500 guinea pigs from a Colorado breeder.

Cavies and Canines Animal Rescue took in the guinea pigs from a breeder who was unable to properly care for the animals. The rescue group said it found the pigs living in "deplorable" conditions. They were severely overcrowded in small plastic containers and lacked essentials like hay, food and water.

Many of the rescued guinea pigs are pregnant and suffer from serious health issues, the group said.

The rescue group needs help from the community:

  • Donations for medical bills and transportation
  • Volunteers to give medical treatments and baths
  • Experienced fosters to take in the guinea pigs

Anyone who wants to help can fill out the form at this link and a member of the rescue team will be in contact: https://forms.gle/zYQ3ENEA9gt2JNon9

Community members can also make a donation.
