A Colorado hotel is planning to eliminate thousands of plastic water bottles

The Westin Resort and Spa near Beaver Creek will stop using and selling single use plastic water bottles this spring.

AVON, Colo. — Plastic water bottles have become a common site at most hotels but this spring you’ll have a hard time finding them at the Westin Riverfront Resort and Spa near Beaver Creek.

General manager Kristin Pryor said the hotel will stop using and stop selling single use plastic water bottles on May 1, a move that will eliminate more than 100,000 plastic bottles a year at the hotel.

"As we looked at plastic, we realize we use over 133,000 water bottles a year,” said Pryor. “What an impact we can make and hopefully inspire others to do the same.”

The rising cost of recycling often means plastic ends up on loading docks or dumped in the ocean. So, the plan at the Westin is to skip recycling all together and reduce how much plastic they use.

“We all hear the stories about plastic containers sitting on loading docks and no one will buy it anymore,” said Pryor. “The best way to make that impact is just not use it.”

That means guests at the hotel will start using reusable glass water bottles that can be filled up at water stations around the hotel.

There are also plans to eliminate the small plastic shampoo, conditioner and lotion bottles in hotel rooms.
