DENVER — Cannabis retailers should take heed of a striking divergence in the way men and women appear to experience shopping for the drug, a new study suggests.

By significant margins, men prefer to shop alone and are more likely to feel comfortable at dispensaries, according to a survey of cannabis users in Oregon, Washington and Colorado by the marketing communications agency Quinn Thomas and pollster DHM Research.

“Owners of licensed dispensaries may want to think about how to approach the retail experience to address these disparities,” the study said.

Among the possibilities the authors float: differently branded spaces with male or female clientele in mind, and training budtenders “about the feelings different shoppers bring to the dispensary.”
