2 years after a man was found dead in a field, police look for a woman who could help solve the case

Paul Sheffield's body was found in a field near East 64th Avenue and Interstate 270 in 2022. His family hopes for a crack in the case of who killed him.

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. — Commerce City Police think a potential witness could be their key to cracking a cold case murder, but right now they don't know where that person is.

On Sept. 25, 2022, police responded to a field near East 64th Avenue just south of Interstate 270. Investigators found the body of Paul Sheffield. They believe he was shot.

"I never ever thought anybody would want to hurt him, like why?" said Travis Sheffield, Paul's son. "There’s no reason. He was just a good person. It’s just really hard to not have him anymore."

Sheffield said he had reconnected with his father four months before his death. He got to know him more and meet many of his friends, including Bonnie Richmond, who called Sheffield her best friend.

"One of his friends actually thought I was his sister for a while," Richmond said. "But I'm not his sister, not by blood anyways. It's weird when you get a call that says he's gone. I mean, I didn't think he'd be gone."

Sheffield lived in an encampment in that field, and police want to speak to someone they believe was also there – Sherry Ann Stephens. Investigators believe she might have lived in the area and may have information that would lead to an arrest in this case.

Richmond she knows of Stephens but she does not know where she is.

"I hope she doesn’t have anything to do with it," Richmond said. "But at the same time, I hope she knows who did."

Sheffield's son, Travis, said he hopes someone comes forward to give his family and his father peace.

"It would bring justice to my Dad. It really would," he said. "Please come forward."

Commerce City Police said Stephens is not a suspect in this case. They said they are revisiting this case now because they believe it can be solved.

Anyone who has information about Stephens' whereabouts can contact the Commerce City Police Department tip line at (303) 289-3626. That person can remain anonymous.
