Police stop vehicle after 100+ mph chase

The suspect stopped after attempting a U-turn and hitting an officer's patrol unit, according to police.

FRASER, Colo. — A driver who led police on a chase Monday night in Grand County has been taken into custody.

At about 9:39 p.m. on April 15, police saw a black Volkswagen Golf going more than 100 mph on Highway 40, according to the Fraser Winter Park Police Department. The officer who spotted the vehicle tried to stop the driver near Telemark Drive. The driver continued on westbound Telemark and then into the Grand Park Subdivision, according to police.

Police followed the vehicle into the back parking lot of the Grand Park Recreation Center. When the driver, a 20-year-old man, attempted to make a U-turn, he lost control and hit an officer's car, according to police.

The driver and a passenger inside the vehicle surrendered to police and were taken into custody.

The driver was treated for minor injuries and booked into the Grand County Jail on vehicular eluding, reckless driving, and reckless endangerment charges, according to police.

The officer involved in the crash had minor injuries but continued working, police said.

The passenger in the suspect's vehicle told police the driver had been driving at 120 mph before police tried to stop him. The passenger was released at the scene.

The Colorado State Patrol investigated the crash. Grand County Sheriff's Office and Grand County Emergency Medical Services assisted in the incident.
